There are two ways to get to Sierra negra volcano Galapagos. The first is on a Galapagos cruise that includes this stop in its itinerary. The second is by taking a day tour from Isabela Island.

Trip itinerary
The tour starts early in the morning; a bus or car will pick you up and take you to the trailhead which is 30 minutes from Puerto Villamil and continues along the path that leads to the Sierra Negra volcano.
The walk lasts about 5 hours and most of the trail is flat, with a few ups and downs. Although you’re given lunch, it’s necessary to take at least one liter of water because the sun is really strong and you’ll definitely need it on your return.

There are five stops along the trail: at the beginning, there are two which have a panoramic view of the volcano’s crater, then there’s one more at the small volcano and two more stops after that to refresh and eat lunch.
When you enter the small volcano inside the crater of the Sierra Negra Volcano, you’ll notice that it’s still active and a lot of the holes feel warm when you put your hand over them. At the end of the walk, you’ll see one of the most fascinating viewpoints where you’ll surely think that you are on another planet.

After a lot of research, I found a travel assistance service that really works and helps in difficult moments. Good travel insurance that covers flight cancellations is key and, in purchasing this, travelers that visit my blog also get a 5% discount.
I asked Choko to include the hike to Sierra Negra Vulcano on Isabela Island as a last minute request and I’m happy that he could manage to book the trip! Isabela is the island i liked the most and the hike to Sierra Negra and vulcano Chico lead you to a place (caldera) which looks unreal, you have to see it with your eyes. Do not consider it an easy hike, especially in warm days, it’s 16 km overall, bring lots of water and hydration. It is also possibile to arrive at an outlook on the top of Sierra Negra and do not descend and climb back Vulcano Chico, which make it a shorter hike (approximately 12 km hike).
Also, a special mention to our guide, Mr. Alfredo Bologna, a true monument among park guides, who ‘s been climbing the vulcano every day in the last six years!

Este Tour me parece muy recomendable, porque te da la oportunidad de descubrir el interior de Isla Isabela ,que es preciosa en todos los sentidos .
Toda la organización de recogida de pasajeros funcionó muy bien, y llegamos temprano al inicio de la caminata ,después de un trayecto con paisajes muy verdes y súper bonitos .
El guía para el grupo en español fué un señor originario de la Isla , que sabia muchísimo de Isabela , y sobre todo lo había vivido . Incluidas varias erupciones de volcanes .
La caminata fué muy agradable, primero por un camino con mucha vegetación, muy verde ,pájaros, mariposas ….
Luego llegamos a la caldera del vocan , donde fué la última erupción. El guía nos explicó todo lo ocurrido y también sus conocimientos sobre volcanes . Tuvimos suerte ,y estaba despejado . Así que buen día para fotos .
A partir de ahí el camino se hizo más pedregoso ,así que recomendaría zapatillas de trekking ,aunque la gente joven de mi grupo ,algunos subieron con zuecos ,pero de.los buenos ,eso si. Yo no hubiera podido!!
Llegamos a un pequeño refugio abierto ,pero techado , donde comimos . A partir de ahi ,los paisajes cambian muchísimo, ahora son paisajes totalmente volcánicos, incluso con pequeñas fumarolas y la actividad volcánica se palpa en el ambiente. Una preciosidad
Al el final del trayecto hay unas vistas espectaculares de la costa de la Isla.Isabela ,y de ve incluso la.Isla.Fernandina a su lado . Me ha quedado el recuerdo de las vistas y la charla muy agradable entre el grupo y el guía, muy especial.
Luego ya la bajada , y la vuelta por el mismo camino precioso ,pero ahora con otra luz.
El guía muy profesional y añadiría que me pareció una persona muy de verdad de la Isla Isabela . Nos encantó a todos oírle hablar de sus experiencias.
Asi que que un Tour muy recomendable , por todo lo que he dicho anteriormente. Y muy bien organizado .
El conocer los.paisajes del interior de Isabela , me parece un imprescindible.

Scenery is beautiful, bring LOTs of water to hydrate, a hat and reapply sunscreen as much as possible. The hike is 10 miles and it was a lot harder than we thought on our way back. Great communication with Choko, highly recommended and will use again if we come back to Galapagos. We had a ferry back to Santa Cruz and we were back on time by 2pm to our hotel no problem at all.
Loved this hike Sierra Negra Volcano! Mostly flat, cloudy in the day we went so did not get to see much of caldera but the volcano was FANTASTIC! The guide was wonderful. Appreciate Choko setting up this your for us!
The Sierra negra volcano landscape is really really nice and we could take some lovely pictures.
But our guide was quite in a rush. You walk 16km and we didnt make a break longer than 10 minutes. Most of the trail is flat – yes. But in the beginning it goes up and up and up and as the guides are in a rush, you basically run up that hill.
To Choko: Choko was one of the only operators that payed us back due to the covid-situation in April 2020. Thank you for that.
This hiking tour was quite harsh. The guide was a little bit in a hurry, may be because of the fact that the fog did not permit a view over the huge crater while we mounted. We were lucky to have some sun on the return, The view of the huge crater was the whole trip worth. The visit of the little crater was very informative about ancient and recent lava formations, but quite exhausting too.
This tour was really good – would definitely recommend.
This was a wonderful tour! The tour guide was very knowledgeable about volcanoes and took the time to explain the sights along the way. Choko was extremely helpful recommending tours to us and helping with all of the arrangements. I will definitely be using Choko Trip for any future adventures in the Galapagos as Choko took the time to inform me of our options of tours available during our stay and made arrangements for each.
Great hiking trip to an alien volcanic landscape. Excellent hike, even in miserable weather. (It was raining most of the time during our hike, but the last 30 minutes to the small crater made up for all the trouble.)
