Isabela Island; I share a guide with first-hand and updated information to know what to do on your own, what tours you can take and a tentative itinerary to enjoy this Island in Galapagos – Ecuador.

Isabela Galapagos Island, is one of the four habitable islands and is located to the west. It is the largest of all the islands and is truly stunning. The advantage of visiting this Island are: the proximity of its beaches for bathing, ease of reaching viewpoints, turtle breeding center and natural pools.

On Isla Isabela (Ecuador), it remains with little urban development, this island maintains a small-town feel with a wild touch making it stand out from Santa Cruz or San Cristobal Island, considered to be more like small cities.

HOW TO GET TO ISABELA ISLAND

To get to Isabela Island in the Galapagos, you must take a flight from Quito to Guayaquil to Baltra Airport (Santa CRuz) or to San Cristobal Airport. After that, you can get to Isabela Island two ways:

    1. Inter-island flights to Isla Isabela: There are two airlines that operate between the islands from Santa Cruz or San Cristobal to Isabela Island. These are Emetebe y FlyGalapagos
    2. Inter-island ferries to Isabela Island: If you want to go to from San Cristobal to Isabela on an inter-island boar, also called ferries, you will have to take 2 speedboats. First, one that goes to Santa Cruz and then you’ll wait for the ferry that goes to Isabela.

*One hour prior to traveling by an inter-island ferry or speedboat, take seasickness medication, like Mareol or Anautin. Try to sit in the back of your vessel or ask to go above, where the captain is seated.

I went to Trillizos cause I heard good things about it. However, your safety is not their concern. The harness goes all the way up the volcano and all the way down to the ground. Some of the steps are broken (and broke on my way being pulled UP the volcano). But, isn’t the harness supposed to stop you from hitting the ground? Cause this one does not.

I was there with another tourist and the tour guide. Luckily, the other tourist was from Spain and was SO nice and helped me out a ton while also staying the whole day and waited until I was dragged up the volcano hours later.

Long story short, I fell off the last ladder about 30 feet (5 meters) and the harness brought me all the way to the ground, where I broke 3 bones in my ankle/leg. I had to be pulled up the volcano after spending 4 hours at the bottom because I couldn’t climb my way back up and had to wait for help. The police and firemen pulled me up the volcano and while being pulled up, multiple steps broke which was a bit scary since I fell.

I had to get surgery on my left leg and now have multiple screws and metal plates inside of my leg.

I do not recommend doing this. I heard after my fall that they haven’t updated this in 40 years (since making it) so that was reassuring….

Also, the guy in charge told me he’d help pay for my medical expenses in Ecuador (since healthcare is free you only have to pay for the medicine). He initially agreed but now has been dodging my messages.

This volcano is dangerous and I wish I had done my research and asked around before going into it. I have a total of 6 months of recovery. I hope people read this and decide for themselves instead of finding out the hard way like I had to. I would not want anyone else to go through what has happened to me.

I hope people read this and recognize how dangerous this is. From the broken ladders to the unsafe harness, please be aware of how unsafe and risky this activity is.
